News from the front lines

Most of what you read here, you will not see on the nightly news. The real action, the battle for souls, seldom makes it to the mainstream. But these stories tell of that struggle with eternal consequences. Read and pray for those on the frontlines.

Maldives: Christians released still face pressure

  All known Maldivian believers imprisoned.
Praise God that after nearly five months in prison and under house arrest, all known Maldivian believers were set free on November 17. However, they are still being closely watched by their government, have little or no access to Scripture, and have been told that more jail time awaits them if they continue to practice their faith in Christ.Maldives Many around the world have prayed for a young woman who had been held in solitary confinement. Her story is a beautiful testimony to the faithfulness of God and His answers to prayer. She strongly experienced God Himself as her protector and companion in jail. There is also evidence that some believers were coerced to renounce their faith in order to be released from jail, though it is unknown exactly what they said or what was going on inside their hearts. Please continue to pray for believers facing enormous pressure.

Satan has the remainder of the people of the Maldives imprisoned. Pray that his power will be broken and that these, whom Jesus died to free, will be set free indeed.(Luke 4:18)

Bangladesh:
A deluge of catastrophe

(Thursday, 17 Sep 1998) In the worst floods in their history, 125 million Bengalis have to seek shelter wherever they can--by moving their beds on to bamboo stilts, or by moving to their rooftops, or by fleeing to flood shelters set up in schools and public buildings. Estimates are that three-fourths of the country are under water. Crop loss and epidemics are inescapable. One Baptist relief worker wrote that in addition to the physical suffering, the heartache is eternally compounded when we realize most of those who have died have never had a reasonable chance to believe in Jesus Christ." However, Aug 1 this year a first "International Consultation on reaching the Bengali People" was held in Calcutta and attended primarily by Indian Christians.

Reconciliation March

From 1996 through 1999, Christians participated in a Reconciliation Walk through the Middle East in repentance for the blood shed during the Crusades. November 27, 1995, marked the 900th anniversary of the day when Pope Urban first called Western Christendom to take up arms and liberate the Holy Land from the Muslims.  (more...)
Rejoice, Kazakhstan!
    Rejoice! Rejoice!
    Rejoice, Kazakhstan!
    Rejoice, Kazakhstan;
    Immanuel has come!

"The song was sung in Kazak, so I wasn’t able to decipher all of it. But the chorus was a powerful expression of faith and hope for a country only recently open to the Kazakhstan
Gospel. The first time I heard it was in a remote city. It was sung by six young people in their Sunday worship service. There would normally have been a somewhat larger group of young people, but some of them had stayed away from the Christian meeting due to threats from local school officials.

"My next exposure to the song was at a Bible study a few days later in the same city. This time there were 8 young Kazak women gathered to study Luke chapter 3. One of the ladies, herself a relatively new believer, gave a strong challenge to the man of the house where the meeting was being held. Later that weekend I heard the song for a third time. On this occasion we were in Almaty, the former capital and largest city of Kazakhstan. Some two hundred Kazaks, led by a local worship team with a high-decibel sound system, burst forth in praise to the God who has indeed come to their people!

"Just ten years ago there were hardly any Kazak believers. Now they number perhaps 5,000. Similar breakthroughs have occurred among many of the Turkic peoples of Central Asia. But there are still vast stretches of this hitherto forgotten region that are still unreached. Our longing is to hear all these countries join in singing, 'Rejoice, rejoice, Kazakhstan; Kyrgyzstan; Uzbekistan; Turkmenistan; Tajikistan; Azerbaijan; Xinjiang; Pakistan; Afghanistan; Turkey; Iran; Bulgaria! Immanuel has come!'"

Hohhot, China: Thousands attend church openly

Missionary radio broadcasters report miraculous church growth in Inner Mongolia, along China's northern border. Recently the Words of Hope broadcast coordinator had an opportunity to spend some time in the capital city of Inner Mongolia, Hohhot. He attended 9:30 AM service that was packed with over 1,500 people. That church is just one of 40 large churches just in the capitol city of Hohhot. In 13 years the church there has grown from two-thousand believers to over 150-thousand with no obvious explanation except the move of the Holy Spirit.
